News Link: SIU researchers win $125K XPRIZE
SIU’s Advanced Energy Institute is supporting a team made up of graduate students Tia Zimmerman and Jennifer Pierce, and assistant professor of microbiology Dr. Scott Hamilton-Brehm, that recently won an XPRIZE from the Musk Foundation to advance a novel approach to Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) developed at SIU. CCS will be a critical part of efforts to slow, and ultimately reverse, climate change driven by accumulation of CO2 in the atmosphere.
The team's approach uses oxidative hydrothermal dissolution (OHD) technology developed at SIU, which liquifies waste biomass for underground microbe consumption and ultimate permanent sequestration.
A promotional youtube video describing the Carbon Down Under Project is posted here.
